2011 Memorial Day at the Presidio

May 28, 2011

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This day has become a day for a more general expression of memory, as ordinary people visit the graves of their deceased relatives whether they served in the military or not.

This year as in past years the Club was been invited to attend the Memorial Day ceremony at the Presidio. The celebration is replete with prayers, marching units, and speeches by military and civic leaders. The heroes of all wars fought by the United States were remembered and honored.
